It may seem kind of humorous at times, however it is no laughing matter. The  story  I'm about to tell had a profound impact on my life which is directly related to my personal passion for exciting travel experiences and living life to the fullest. Tragic Tale Of Eileen The Vacation Carryover Queen

Eileen (not her real name) was my boss for many years at my former corporate job. Eileen was highly educated, successful and talented! She was highly ambitious with a relentless drive and determination that carried her to a high position of leadership within a remarkably short time. However,  Eileen also had a dark side. Without going into specific details, I will tell you that Eileen's personal life was a complete mess. It was a litany of failures - the exact opposite of her life as a dynamic upwardly mobile corporate executive.

In an attempt to neutralize the pain of her personal life, Eileen immersed herself in work. She hungrily accepted any and every project she could get her hands on. Eileen would routinely put in  10 - 12 hour days at the office. On top of that....

• Eileen worked during her commute to work!
• Eileen worked during her commute from work!
• Eileen worked at home!
• Eileen worked during lunch!
• Eileen worked on weekends!
• Eileen worked on holidays!

Eileen Was the Epitome Of A Work-A-Holic!!!

Eileen's life was the job and the job was her life. She had stopped taking vacation time pretty soon after I started working with her. As the years rolled by, her vacation carryover days kept piling up.  Eileen justified  forgoing vacation as being a noble act of self-sacrifice for the good of the the firm. She wore each one of her vacation carryover days as a badge of honor and deluded herself into to believing that she was just too important to go on vacation because the firm could not afford to be without her for one day! Out of curiosity I decided to find out exactly how many carryover days Eileen had. I was able to pull some strings with the personnel department to discover that Eileen had amassed well over ....

100 Carryover Days!

Eileen's irrational disregard for vacation rubbed off on myself and other staff members. For example, one day I requested a two week vacation and these are the exact words of Eileen's response:

"I’d be afraid to take a two week vacation. If the firm can operate for two weeks without me then it shows that I am not needed."

I was shocked. I don't believe that Eileen intended for that statement to be a direct threat, but it sure felt like it.  I heard Eileen's not so subtle hint loud and clear.  She placed no value in vacation for herself nor her staff members. I was afraid she would react negatively if I took a long vacation. Since she was in control of my purse strings, in terms of salary increases and bonuses, I did not want to get on her “bad side” of course. I  never did take that two week vacation. The "vacations" that I did  take were always short  and not very enjoyable.

To make matters worse, after many years of being subject to Eileen's influence, I started to give up on the idea of vacation completely and adopt her insane "work ethic" to the detriment of my personal life. The situation came to a critical point one day when my poor wife literally begged me to take her on a vacation trip and I refused by telling her that my work schedule would not allow it. I had become married to my job. This was a terrible situation that lasted far too long. Then seemingly out of nowhere, tragedy struck!

 Eileen Was Diagnosed With A Fatal Form Of Cancer!

The sadness, horror and irony of this situation was truly devastating. The sacrifice Eileen made for her "successful career" was all for nothing. Over the years I literally witnessed  the deterioration of an intelligent and vibrant individual. I know that Eileen's cancer diagnoses caused her to regret past decisions regarding her personal life. However it was too late for her to make a change. Her time had literally run out

Poor Eileen Could Not Take Her Vacation Days To The Grave

Eileen's tragedy and the dire state of my situation struck me in the face like a brick. I new that if I remained "married to my job" the outcome would not be good.  My personal life was suffering needlessly and I needed to make a dramatic change ASAP! I decided to leave the corporate world forever and become the master of my own destiny through my own business. My goal not was only to be successful financially, but to also be in a position to enjoy the fruits of my success. It was not easy at first, but I am blessed and fortunate to have achieved this because Eileen's tragedy clearly demonstrated that...

Life Is Too Short To Be Taken For Granted!

This is the lesson I learned. What good is wealth or success if you can't enjoy it? If there is anything important you wish to accomplish like:

• Having a family
• Taking your dream vacation
• Starting a Business
• Buying a bigger home

The right time to start taking focused action to accomplish you goals is TODAY! Tomorrow is not guaranteed as Eileen sadly discovered.

For me, enjoying my success is manifested in the time freedom I now have to spend time with my family and  enjoy luxury travel to make up for the vacation opportunities I lost during my time in the corporate world. Now you should be able to fully understand my inspiration for writing this letter and why I am so passionate about travel. I am not alone either!
